Singapore working visa for Dutch

Your Dutch Passport Opens the Door to Singapore. It Does Not Let You Work There.

Singapore is one of the most attractive places in Asia for Dutch founders, executives, investors and professionals. It is efficient, business-friendly, well connected and strategically placed between Europe and Southeast Asia.

So it is no surprise that more Dutch citizens are looking at Singapore and asking the same question: Can I work from there?

The answer is yes.

But not just because you are Dutch.

And definitely not just because you can enter the country.

A Dutch passport may help you travel to Singapore. It does not give you the automatic right to work there.

The moment “visiting” turns into “working,” a different set of rules quietly switches on, and most people don’t notice until immigration or tax authorities do it for them.

Visiting Singapore is easy. Working there is different.

You may be able to fly in for meetings, attend conferences, meet investors, explore the market and speak to potential partners.

But the moment your activity becomes actual work, the rules change.

This may include taking up a job in Singapore, managing a Singapore-based role, relocating as a founder or executive, working remotely while physically in Singapore, operating a company from Singapore or hiring and managing a team on the ground.

Singapore is open to international talent, but it is also serious about compliance.

Requirement

If you intend to work in Singapore, you generally need the right work pass before you start.

There is no “Dutch citizen work visa”

This is another common misconception.

Singapore does not give Dutch citizens a special work visa simply because they are from the Netherlands.

The right route depends on your role, salary, qualifications, employer, company structure and long-term plan.

For many professionals, the Employment Pass is the main route. For skilled workers, the S Pass may apply. For entrepreneurs building an innovative business in Singapore, EntrePass may be relevant. For top global talent, there are also other options such as the Overseas Networks & Expertise Pass.

But the key point is simple:

Your work pass must match what you are actually doing.

Not what looks convenient on paper.

Founders need to be even more careful

For Dutch founders, Singapore can be a very attractive Asia base.

But opening a Singapore company is not the same as being allowed to work from Singapore.

That is where problems often begin.

Before moving, you need to ask whether you can legally work from Singapore, whether you can act as a director while living there, whether you need a work pass, whether your company has enough substance, whether Singapore may become your tax residence and whether the Netherlands may still tax you.

Warning

A Singapore company without immigration and tax planning is not a strategy. It is just a company.

Remote work is not a magic loophole

Many people assume that if their employer or clients are outside Singapore, Singapore rules do not matter.

That is risky.

If you are physically in Singapore while working, there may still be immigration and tax consequences.

Your employer may also need to consider payroll, reporting, corporate tax or permanent establishment exposure.

Remote work sounds simple.

Cross-border remote work is not.

And then there is tax

Immigration is only the first layer.

Tax is the second.

If you spend enough time living or working in Singapore, Singapore tax residency may become relevant.

But that does not automatically mean the Netherlands disappears from the picture.

Dutch tax exposure may still need to be reviewed if you keep a home, family ties, business interests, directorships, investments, bank accounts, income streams or other strong connections in the Netherlands.

So the real question is not:

“Can Dutch citizens work in Singapore?”

The better question is:

“Can I work from Singapore without creating problems in Singapore, the Netherlands or somewhere else?”

That is the question that matters.

Plan before you move

Singapore can be an excellent base for Dutch entrepreneurs, professionals and families.

But the order matters.

Before relocating, you should understand which work pass applies, whether your company structure works, where you may become tax resident, whether the Netherlands may still tax you, how your salary, dividends and invoicing should be structured, whether your banking setup supports the move and what happens if your family relocates with you.

Note

Moving first and fixing the structure later is usually where the cost starts.
